Video shows 58 years of space debris around the Earth – El Colombiano

An animation produced by Stuart Grey, professor of College London and member of the Laboratory of Space Geodesy and Navigation, shows how since the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 in 1957, have accumulated millions of waste satellites and spacecraft around the world

.

According to the publication, in 2015 some 20,000 pieces of space junk more than ten centimeters in Earth orbit, half a million more pieces measuring one centimeter and tens of millions of smaller fragments.

Each mission has created new space debris from launch vehicles, objects falling satellites, or unwanted collisions.

The animation titled The history of space debris, warning about the dangers of such objects in orbit especially for manned missions.

Recognizing this NASA, among others, they have created protocols to reduce the generation of new ones.
