Documentaries to see on the International Day of Safe Internet – Hypertext

it is Never a bad day to enjoy a documentary, and given that today it is precisely the International Day of the Internet Safe, we bring to you a collection of documentaries to broaden your knowledge of the past, present and future, in addition to important events that occurred, of this tool which seems to have come into our lives to stay.

The International Day of Safe Internet is celebrated each February since 2003, and has the support of more than 70 countries around the world. The aim of the day is primarily to raise awareness about the use of the network, especially among the younger audience. Of course, there is no better way of knowing something to investigate in the place that you came from. We’re going to do this:

Ashley Madison: Sex, Lies and Cyber Attacks

A documentary from Channel4 but that is available on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and iTunes. In principle, investigates the history of Ashley Madison, the dating site for married people, very controversial for inciting the infidelity. The site was hacked by the collective hacktivist collective Impact Team, who threatened to bring to light all the user data —names, emails and even bank accounts— if the site was not closed immediately. Not closed and is released the data of more than 30 million users.

What makes this a hack different from the others was his proportion and damage: entire families were destroyed, and some people even committed suicide. But it also uncovered another important thing: the foundation of the relationship, sometimes, they are fragile and fraudulent. As a minimum, a good lesson.

Deep Web

This BBC documentary 2015, directed by Alex Winter, covers the events that happened from the birth until the cessation —at least for the first version of the website Silk Road. Silk Road was a website dedicated to the sale of drugs, which used Bitcoin as a mode of payment so that the purchases of hard drugs, were carried out anonymously through the platform. The supporters of the existence of this portal, they appeal to the violence that has extended the "fight against drugs" and argued that the portal was a safer alternative to the current drug market. And what is true is that, the inclination is libertarian of the interviewees that appear, suggests that the Silk Road was a matter that was much more about getting people to have access to the freedom of being able to sell and buy what they want –do not do this harm to others–, they had ideals.

The documentary covers the trial of Ross Ulbricht, creator of Silk Road, or at least one of their administrators during the life of the site. He ironically does not appear because it is a prisoner and do not allow it. However, under your history note the criticism towards the rights of citizens in the digital age on the part of Governments and the way of acting of the police is seen being questioned continuously, launching an important question: how Much freedom you really have?

The work is available on Netflix, under the name "Inside the dark web" but also what I found on Youtube.

We Are Legion: The Story of The Hacktivist

This documentary of the 2012 speaks about the workings and beliefs of the collective "hacktivist" Anonimus. The movie speaks of how he was born Anónimus in the bowels of 4chan. And how what at first began as a lot of trolls together, making jokes, became a political tool. With no intention of becoming heroes, many of the former members, appear telling what motivated them to enter in some of the "operations” of its history. And the price they are paying for it. the Also tells the relationship that the group has with Wikileaks.

In short, teaches a new way of looking at the hackers, not the criminals locked up in cellars that initially appear to be, but as activists and protectors of the freedom of expression, which simply attack with computer tools because they are the ones that have, when they perceive a threat to Internet freedom or personal privacy.

This is the official website of the film. You can buy the DRM, but it is also available in Vimeo, Netflix, or even Youtube.

Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World

it Is the most recent film on this list, 2016; it was directed and produced by Werner Herzog and is about the impact of the Internet, robotics, artificial intelligence and other modern technologies, in the human life. Of passage, it narrates the history of the Internet: the first computer, the first message, the first "phone book of the Internet"… moving towards technologies that we use today and our dependence on them, how relegarán each time more to human strength, or how, although are still far away, they will be more intelligent robots, which their creators. Does not forget to deal where we are going, in fact, appears Elon Musk explaining why he wants to lead us to Mars even if perhaps you may not offer return tickets.

In short, if you can only see a documentary of the entire list, this is the most comprehensive, at least the one that attacks all fronts, or almost all. To understand the impact of Internet in our lives.

it Is on Netflix but can also be found on iTunes, Amazon video and another half dozen Streaming servers. The full list is on the website of the film.

All work, All play

I Felt that the documentary exposed were forgetting an important part of the Internet: games. While it is true that it is just one of the many activities that you can do on the network, the other work is ignored, or almost not named. Therefore, I wanted to share this documentary film about e-sports and the revolution which have course in the world of show business and in sports.

The documentary focuses on the that occurs behind-the-scenes of eSports, the pros and cons of this profession and the negotiations that take place. It also has the origins: how they have gone from a few guys huddled in a garage or in internet cafes to a multi-billion dollar industry, in which you see other people playing video games has become an entertainment just as valid as a game of football. In him, moreover, appear important players of the sector, as well as other professionals of this kind of tournaments.

it Is available on Netflix, Amazon video and iTunes.
