Develop the first exoskeleton for children with neuromuscular problems – Teletrece

The Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) , in Spain, has just introduced the first exoskeleton world , intended for children suffering spinal muscular atrophy , a degenerative disease of genetic origin. The device will allow them to walk and significantly increase their quality of life.

The structure made with titanium and aluminum , weighs 12 and has a range of five hours, thanks operated rechargeable lithium batteries . It has long brackets that fit legs and trunk of the patient.

It also has 5 small engines (per leg) that mimic the function of joints and human muscle, providing strength and support to the extremities.

currently, there are more than 400 thousand children in the world with this disease , and only in Spain could help more than 2,000.

However, it is difficult to go to market or adoption increases, due to its high cost and the funding problems .

“Our intention is that, when you can make the board, cost about 800 euros per month rent and a 50,000 euros buy . However, we would get some coverage to help families cope with this cost, “says Elena García, CSIC scientist.

The exoskeleton is designed for children between 3 and 14 years can make rehabilitation at home and use in their daily routines, but also in hospitals as training therapy.
