Scientists have discovered a new oilfield in the famous Cueva del Fantasma with debris that could range between 350,000 and 400,000 years old. The finding came after researchers initially canvassed this place a year ago when they pointed that may contain traces of up to 1.8 million years ago. Confirmation of this hypothesis, with some remains that currently have less seniority, anticipated exploration campaign to begin in 2017. For archeologists, the future of Atapuerca goes through this site.

The remains found in the Cueva del Fantasma, which have several visible levels have remained unchanged for centuries, with the exception of several blasts in the Trinchera del Ferrocarril. Initial results presented by Eudald Carbonell and Juan Luis Arsuaga anticipate the observation corresponding to ancestors and Neanderthals or Homo antecessor remains. Expectations, however, are placed on the lower levels, where they could detect even older remains. The prospecting campaign 2017 will clarify us questions about this deposit, a scientific project that will also begin after approval of the Board of Castilla y León to design a cover that protects the area.

The group also Atapuerca has discovered new remains in the so-called Pit of Bones, where a few months ago the origin of the remains of 28 individuals 400,000 years ago was determined. The findings correspond to three phalanges, one end of tibia, another fibula and a third of the humerus, part of a clavicle and some fragments of ribs and skull.

The researchers do not rule out that are more fossils study campaign to have extended until July 28. Scientists have also reported the discovery of various faunal remains and lithic pieces. Atapuerca, recognized by UNESCO as a site of outstanding universal value, continues to be a box of surprises to study and learn more about human evolution, as demonstrated by the publication of a new model of the evolution of the body made a few months ago.
