Scientists discover evidence of the impact of a large asteroid – El Diario de Hoy

Experts say this would have caused earthquakes and tsunamis of huge magnitudes

A team of scientists from the National University of Australia discovered evidence of the impact of a large asteroid, notes the work which has been published in Precambrian Research .

This is pearls of tiny glass called spherules, evidence that has been found in northwest Australia , according to experts, were formed from vaporized material.

Andrew Glikson, one of the main authors noted that the impact would have caused earthquakes and tsunamis of huge magnitude, which would have caused, for example, many of today’s cliffs.

“The material of the impact would have spread throughout the world. These spherules were found in the sediments of the sea bottom dating back 3.46 million years ago,” he stated.

Glikson noted that the asteroid would have had between 20 and 30 kilometers in diameter and would have created a crater hundreds of kilometers wide.

However, the exact place where the rock hit the planet “remains a mystery.” “Any crater this time on the surface of the Earth has been erased by volcanic activity and tectonic movements”, he pointed

Los experts found the glass beads in a core drilling Marble Bar, in west Australia , in some of the oldest known sediments on Earth.
