Amazon.com announced Monday that it will acquire Twitch, network real-time online games, paying about $ 970 million in cash and recorded one of the biggest purchases in their history.

The program reflects the increasing investment of Amazon in original content for television and games in recent years, in which e-commerce company diversifies its business across the retail sector, as revealed by Reuters.

The transaction is expected to close in the second half of the year, Amazon said in a statement.

‘Upload and view games is a global phenomenon and Twitch has built a platform that brings together tens of millions of people for billions of minutes of games each month, “Amazon CEO Jeff said in a statement Bezos.

Google Inc. was previously in talks to buy Twitch, said a source with knowledge of the matter.

Millions of players visit your website every month

The Twitch format, which allows those who watch the games send messages to players and each during live games, is garnering interest as one of the fastest growing segments of the real-time transmission of digital video , which in turn is attracting more and more advertising dollars.

The company said more than 45 million players visit your website every month.

“We are keeping mostly the same: our office, our employees, our brand, and most importantly our independence,” said Chief Executive Twitch, Emmett Shear, in a blog post. “But with the support of Amazon will have the resources to provide better Twitch” he added.

Video games are among the most popular content on YouTube, the video website world number one Google property.

In September, Twitch grossed $ 20 million in funding from Thrive Capital, WestSummit Capital and Take-Two Interactive Software, among other partners.
