The Philae loses power – The World

The Philae module first human artifact to get to land on a comet , has “gone to sleep” on the asteroid’s surface due to lack of battery, without knowing whether awakening may again or when.

“With their depleted batteries without enough sunlight to recharge, Philae has entered” sleep “for a potentially long silence” said this Saturday Agency European Space (ESA). ‘Our lander was asleep, “the agency wrote in his Twitter account.

Before we get into this state, which means that all their instruments and most of their systems are turned off, the module could transmit valuable scientific data on the comet 67 / P Churyumov-Gerasimenko, as explained in the blog of the Rosetta mission its director, Stefan Ulamec. Philae managed to pierce the floor of the comet with his hole and placed a thermometer in the comet’s surface .

Ulamec found the device’ve played “superbly under harsh conditions,” , so that he was “proud of the amazing scientific success” has meant.

The contact was lost at 00.36 GMT, shortly before loss of communication that was already planned anyway, because Rosetta, from which was launched Philae, orbits far out of reach .

“From now on, you can not contact anyone unless Philae solar panels receive enough sunlight to generate the energy needed to wake him,” insisted the ESA.

The agency made last night maneuver “lift and turn” on its undercarriage to get the module to better access to sunlight and thus feed his exhausted batteries.

If these efforts are effective verifiable from 10.00 GMT today, when Rosetta can re-establish communication with the module.

After a journey of 511 million miles from Earth module three days landed on the asteroid , but it did not land where planned, but in a dark, rocky area not allowed to charge the batteries.
