Today Samsung announced the arrival in Spain of new smartphones Galaxy A3 (2016) and Galaxy A5 (2016) . Both terminals will be available throughout this week at a price of € 299 (Galaxy A3) and € 429 (Galaxy A5).
Since yesterday A5 have a Galaxy in Teknófilo , although in a few 24 hours is not possible complete analysis if we had time enough evidence and subject him to get an idea of their behavior.
We bring you our first impressions to go opening mouth.
Design
The Galaxy A5 (2016) has a very elegant design, which reminds us enough to the Galaxy S6
. phone elegantly combines metal chassis with two crystals protected by Gorilla Glass 4, covering both the front and the back cover of the device.
The front and rear windows feature a slight curvature at the edges (2.5D) , which not only fulfills an aesthetic function but also makes you feel very soft to the touch when you drag your finger across the surface of the phone.
Obviously the design of the Galaxy A5 is not as exquisite as the edge of the Galaxy S6, with the double curvature of the screen, but it seems pretty smart.
The display has frameworks fairly narrow side and, in general, believe that Samsung has used the space quite well because the frames above and below the screen are relatively narrow.
The back cover is not removable , so do not have access to the inside of the phone. This means that the battery is not replaceable, but in truth there are fewer phones that offer this feature.
the back are the main chamber, which protrudes very slightly from the surface of the phone. The terminal in pretty slim because it has only 7.3 mm thick (the Galaxy S6 has a 6.8mm thick).
Display
The Galaxy A5 (2016) has a Super AMOLED screen with full HD resolution (1920 x 1080). This resolution and screen size involve a high pixel density of 424 dpi.
Thanks to the high density of pixels, text and icons are extremely sharp . In fact, one wonders whether today it makes sense to incorporate panels with higher resolutions to full HD smartphones of this size.
After all, any screen with a pixel density of over 300 ppi guarantee is not possible to distinguish individual pixels except that we look very carefully. Furthermore, the use of panels with such high densities brings some drawbacks because they involve greater battery consumption.
To analyze the quality of the screen have conducted several tests with my Ultimate CalMAN software and a colorimeter X-Rite i1Display Pro.
One of the key aspects when analyzing a AMOLED screen brightness is as generally this type of display offers a brightness level lower than most LCD screens.
For the Galaxy A5 (2016), the maximum brightness of the phone is around 387 nits according to our own measurements.
This is an appropriate value, on other phones with AMOLED displays we’ve tested, as the Lumia 950 (300 nits) or OnePlus X (310 nits), but below other high-end phones like the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge + (500 nits).
With the active color mode by default, Adaptive Display , the color fidelity is not too good because the screen tends to saturate the colors. The average error is found to be 6.3 (a value below 4 is considered excellent and above 9 is unacceptable), and the maximum error is found to be 14.1, a fairly high value.
Analysis with CalMAN Ultimate
Analysis with CalMAN Ultimate
If you activate the basic color mode , the results improve significantly. The average error becomes 1.6, and the maximum error is reduced to 2.8. These results are quite good, leading us to believe that the default color mode distorts the colors excessively increasing its saturation. Now there are many users who prefer intense (and unrealistic) colors against colors that are more realistic.
The white has a color temperature of 7,732 K, well above the reference level of 6,500 K, which implies a bluish tint that is noticeable in applications with white background, such as the browser, if we have another screen next benchmark with which to compare. The gamma value is excellent, 2.2.
black colored is very deep, as you would expect in a AMOLED screen, which means that the contrast is very high theoretically infinite. This means that, for example, to watch a movie, the black horizontal stripes above and below the screen are completely black.
viewing angles are wide and the colors not altered by observing the screen from an angle.
Hardware
Inside the Galaxy A5 (2016) we find processor eight-core 1.6GHz.
Although Samsung has not revealed what particular chip A5 incorporates the Galaxy (2016), the analysis tools we have used show that incorporates the Exynos CPU 7 series quad-core quad-core Cortex A53 and Cortex A57 and Mali T720 GPU.
We have submitted to the Galaxy A5 to some benchmarks to see how it performs compared to other high-end phones.
The benchmark AnTuTu v6 has a score of 41,805 points , a relatively high though far from the most powerful phones time score.
The benchmark Geekbench has got points 699/3626 in the multi-core, mono / tests again are some pretty high results.
The test Javacript SunSpider 1.0 has 1185 ms , a surprisingly poor result compared to other phones. We assume that there is a problem running this test.
In the test of overall performance PCMark , has obtained a score of 4,057 points , a value not particularly outstanding compared to other high-end devices but not bad.
The test 3DMark focused on the graphics capabilities of phone has yielded low results compared to other high-end phones, as his score of 7,904 points Unlimited Ice Storm.
Finally, test graphics GFXBench , the device has obtained new results rather low compared to other high-end phones, as seen in the chart.
In view of the results of the benchmarks we can conclude that the overall performance of the phone is near many high end phones , but does not reach the performance of the most powerful phone of the moment.
In the graphics without But the Galaxy A5 (2016) is quite far from the high-end phones with which we have compared. These results have not surprised us because GPU incorporates the end of 2013 , which has been largely superseded by new models.
Aside from the benchmarks in time we have been testing the phone, this has behaved very fluently. We have not experienced stoppages to use common applications such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp, etc.
We also tested a 3D game demanding as Asphalt 8, which by default is configured in high quality mode. The Galaxy A5 (2016) pleasantly surprised us because, although its GPU is not the most powerful, the game operates very smoothly and we have not noticed loss of frames.
The Galaxy A5 (2016) has a 16GB storage just that can be expanded through micro-SD up to 128GB cards.
We wish to incorporate storage capacity slightly higher , as today not all applications can be move the micro-SD card. Luckily this will not be a problem when the phone receives the update Marshmallow, as it will be possible to format the micro-SD card and internal storage.
In terms of connectivity, the Galaxy A5 (2016) provides LTE / 4G Cat. 6 (up to 300 Mbps), Wi-Fi 802.11 a / b / g / n in the 2.4 and 5 GHz band, NFC and Bluetooth 4.1. It also has FM radio .
A remarkable aspect of the phone is that it has battery 2900 mAh that can not be replaced. This is a battery with a size enough acceptable.
battery test PCMark , with 200 nits calibrated display, the phone has a spectacular result of 9 hours and 29 minutes . This result is well above other phones we’ve tested and was a pleasant surprise.
The Galaxy A5 (2016) has fast load , we hope to test thoroughly in our detailed in a few days analysis.
Finally, the Galaxy A5 (2016) has a fingerprint reader similar to that found in the latest handsets from Samsung, ie by contact. In testing we have done has worked very well, identifying our footprint quickly and without errors.
Interface and functionalities
The Galaxy A5 (2016) has Android 5.1.1 Lollipop , but we hope that will be upgraded to Android 6.0 . Marshmallow in the future
As for software features , we find the usual layer of customization Samsung TouchWiz:
- Control movements and gestures: Smart Alert, Silence and Move palm to capture
- Pay Payment by Samsung (not yet available in Spain)
- Download Booster to speed up downloading of large files and combining WiFi 3G / 4G
- Sound Effects: Adapt Sound, SoundAlive +, tube amplifier
- Theme Manager
Samsung has also incorporated its Applications more emblematic:
- S Health, to monitor our health and physical form
- S Voice, to access phone functions via voice
- Smart Manager, to manage and optimize aspects such as battery storage, RAM and device security
- Galaxy Apps, to access the Samsung Apps store and download other applications that Samsung has left out.
Photo camera
The Galaxy A5 (2016) has a camera with a 13MP sensor and a lens with opening f /1.9, which also has optical stabilization. This camera can capture 1080p videos at 30 fps.
On paper, these features sound pretty interesting because it is not common to find phones this price range that incorporate such a comprehensive camera.
In the photos we have taken during these first hours camera has proven to be quite capable. low light images show a fairly restrained noise level, no doubt thanks to the optics, and good lighting conditions stabilize images captured are sharp
Here you can see a gallery of photos taken with the Galaxy A5 (2016).
camera Front has a 5MP sensor with a lens that also has an opening f /1.9, which allows you to take good selfies. Here you can see a selfie captured with the camera of Galaxy A5.
Finally, one of the most useful shortcuts Galaxy A5 is just press twice quickly the Start button for the camera to open in less than a second.
Conclusions
Although we have not yet had time to submit the Galaxy A5 (2016) to the battery of tests that we carried out in our in-depth analysis, we have spent enough time with him to get a good idea of the terminal.
The Galaxy A5 (2016) has a attractive design , thanks to a construction based on sophisticated materials such as metal and glass. Fortunately the days are long gone in which Samsung made use of plastic even in their high-end devices.
A5 aspect of the Galaxy (2016) is very similar to the Galaxy S6, which for many users can be positive, as this was a very attractive terminal, but there may be others who would have preferred a more original design.
The screen of the phone offers an excellent quality : a very clear picture, vivid colors (perhaps too saturated for the purists in the display mode enabled by default), black in color deep, and wide viewing angles. An improved appearance is the maximum brightness, which is slightly below other high-end phones.
The phone’s performance is very good , and both benchmarks and everyday use the phone with full flow develops, offering an experience similar to that found in high-end phones at a higher price.
In the graphics Galaxy A5 (2016) weakens , at least in the benchmarks, since it incorporates a GPU some games like Asphalt 8 antigua.En we had no problems but may in the future have some difficulty moving demanding 3D games smoothly.
The 2900 mAh battery should be more than enough to guarantee many hours of autonomy and indeed in our tests of autonomy has proven to be a true champion above the other phones with we’ve compared. It also incorporates fast charge, which will be very useful to many users.
The Galaxy A9 (2016) comes with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop , which is a bit disappointing given that other phones that were announced several weeks ago, as the HTC One A9, came with Android in June Marshmallow Factory. We hope that soon the terminal Samsung upgrade to the latest version of Android, although this may not happen until the Galaxy S7.
Finally, the camera offers good image quality in the first tests have been conducted. Its high resolution combined with the optical stabilization and the opening of f /1.9 are good guarantees sharpness and noise content even in low light conditions.
In short, the Galaxy A5 (2016) is a very interesting phone, with an attractive appearance, a very adequate performance and high autonomy , which has left a good impression. In a few weeks we will publish a detailed analysis that delve into all these aspects, so if you want to know more about this phone, stay tuned to this page.
