The new ambitions of Snapchat begin with Spectacles, a pair of modern sunglasses with a video camera built-in wireless.
Snapchat announced its first product of hardware on Saturday 24 September and pointed out that the Spectacles are “a type of camera that is completely new because” record video “from the human perspective”. Snapchat also officially changed its corporate name to Snap Inc.
The chamber of the Spectacles has a viewing angle of 115 degrees, wider than that of a camera of a smartphone common; it is situated on the frame, near the left eye.
“Think of one of your favorite memories. What if you could go back in time and see that memory as you lived? For that we construct the Spectacles,” said the company in a blog.
The Spectacles (or Specs, for short) can record up to 30 seconds of video at once. The lights on the inside and the outside of the frame are lit to let the people know that you’re recording.
The material can be uploaded directly into the folder Memories of the account of Snapchat of a user via Bluetooth or WiFi. The videos are also saved on the eyeglasses so that you need not have your phone close while you’re recording.
The glasses come with a carrying case rechargeable battery that can store a week of material when fully loaded. A single charge of the glasses can last a whole day.
The Spectacles will cost $ 130 dollars (around 2,600 pesos) and will be offered in limited numbers to the end of this year. There will be three models: black, blue, and coral color.
On the other blog, Evan Spiegel, the founder of the company, he explained, because they removed the name, the word chat: ‘When we had just started he had a sense that our company will be called Snapchat Inc. because Snapchat was our only product! Now we are developing other products such as Spectacles, we need a name that goes beyond a product”.
The change has no other purpose other business more seriously: make it easier for people to distinguish the firm from its services. The application will still be called the same, but if people want to search for news of the company in specific, will have to look at Snap Inc.
Snapchat started running five years ago and it is estimated that its value is around 22,700 million dollars.
The company caused a stir by rejecting an offer of purchase of 3,000 millions of dollars from Facebook in 2013 and is planned to start trading on the stock exchange.
