A group of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have determined that what we know as the dark side of the moon is a giant basin formed by cracks.
It was thought that this mystery was a result of the impact of a large asteroid, but the data obtained in the GRAIL mission for NASA show that was produced by a large plume of magma from the very depths of the Moon .
The diameter of the basin covers about 1800 km, almost like America. known as the Procellarum region also encompasses a volcanic land of about 1,800 kilometers in diameter.
Moreover, scientists say that this angular outline was produced by cracks of giant strain in the crust of the Moon after it cooled around a core of upwelling of hot material from the deep interior.
One of the authors of the study, Maria Zuber, states that the cracks formed a “plumbing system” in the moon’s crust through which the magma could travel on the surface. “A lot of things in science are really complicated, but I’ve always loved simple answer such questions,” says the researcher.
