El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO, for short) is a recurring weather pattern, within which the parameters weather equatorial Pacific oscillate every certain period of time. ENSO has two ends:. One of warming and rainfall, called El Niño, and other cooling, known as ‘La Niña’
In their research the scientists performed numerical experiments with a model system the earth. When comparing climate model simulations taking into account the interactions between clouds and atmospheric circulation which did not include these interactions, it was confirmed that the oscillation of the surface temperatures of the sea, which is related to El Niño, is twice stronger in the first simulations, and therefore the clouds double the power of the phenomenon.
The scientists say their finding may help predict El Niño and better understand their response to climate change.
