Thanks for everything Ian Murdock, father of Debian GNU / Linux – we are free

should

The founder of Debian, Ian Murdock, a member of the Linux Foundation and one of the greatest exponents of free software died this week at age 42, said Thursday blog open developer platform Docker .

“Debian mourns the passing of Ian Murdock, a strong supporter of free and open software, father, son and the ‘ian’ in Debian,” the company said in a statement.

Murdock, German-American, founded in 1993 Debian, a free operating system based on Unix and one of the computers used by programmers and software worldwide.

“Ian’s approach was to create a distribution community to do the right thing ethically and technically,” said Debian.

Murdock was chief technology officer of the Linux Foundation, in 2003 he became vice president of Sun Microsystems until the company was acquired by software maker Oracle.

Later he developed systems in the cloud and went to work for the company Salesforce.

Last November, Murdock left the company to join Docker, an open platform for software developers.

Murdock’s death occurs after Monday published a few tweets about a confrontation with police.

That same day Murdock apparently posted a tweet in which he said he was going to commit suicide, although the circumstances of his death have not yet been clarified.

The creation of the Debian project is one of the most significant in the history of free software, along with the GPL. And the loss of its founder and ideologist is huge community of open source software, but not alone. Debian GNU / Linux was one of the first Linux distributions and probably the open source project’s successful history. It is also the largest repository of Linux packages, feeding whole families of free operating systems, Ubuntu to Mint through a constant example of the possibilities of collaborative and decentralized work when the guidelines and licensing are correct.

Debian can be found at NASA, ESA and CERN, in government or Japanese bullet train from Munich, supercomputers, offices and servers of Google, Facebook, Amazon, cars self-directed, tanks, space explorers and most of the servers that run the Internet. In short, Debian is or should be in all places where there may be a failure without a large economic, energy and / or human cost . It is also modular operating system from hackers, Linux users militants and whatever happy with a powerful environment, safe, and customizable. Debian is, indeed, the combination of the name of Ian and Debra Lynn, then his girlfriend.

Another case of police violence?

The news of his death are shrouded in mystery. There are rumors of suicide, fueled by a series of strange tweets announcing the possibility of ending his life, published on Monday.

That same day denied their intentions and said he had been the victim of police violence, they would have arrested him and allegedly severely beaten for having knocked on the door of his neighbor. Another tweet said then followed him to his home and took him to death and tore the underwear. There is talk of a visit to the hospital and also mentions that the fine for “assaulting a police officer” is $ 25,000, suggesting a visit to the police station or jail.

I’ll write more on my blog later. But the police beat me up here for Knowing my neighbor’s door on .. They sent me to the hospital.

The tone and content of these messages was received by the alarming and improper as Ian community, and many have argued from the outset that your account may have been compromised. Others compare his case with that of Aaron Swartz, the hacktivist that took his life 26 years after being harassed disproportionately by the US justice for alleged copyright infringement.

So far, so there are data. If he went to jail for standing up to the police or the hospital following an assault, so far not found the records. Murdock said he wanted “to spend the rest of his life fighting against the police” and would tell all in his blog. His twitter account has been written off and the latest update on his blog is last September.

Docker recalls on its website that, over the past decade, the contributions to the technology community Ian continued as technical director of the Linux Foundation, a senior leader of Sun Microsystems and most recently as vice president of Platforms ExactTarget based in Indianapolis, which became part of Salesforce in 2012.

The company and the family Murdock encourage all questions and condolences are referred to the same post in which announced his death.
