For many residents of the East Coast of the united States, it was a moment in which they had to take off of their computers, or go crazy trying to decipher what parts of the Internet were up and running.

The Friday morning, just when many were settling in to their working day, and access popular websites like Twitter, Spotify, Netflix, Etsy, and until the specialist code GitHub are faced with an ugly scenario: could not access these sites. A hackers, saturated Dyn, a company based in Manchester, New Hampshire, which manages the traffic and to the businesses and companies that operate on the Internet, traffic is garbage. On Friday afternoon, Dyn said that the problem had been solved. However, that was the second time Friday that the company claimed to have solved the problem, and that the attack had finished.

“Some customers [of Amazon Web Services (AWS)] experienced errors while establishing connectivity with a reduced number of points to the AWS in northern Virginia,” said Amazon on Friday and said that the problem has already been solved.

power outages and disruptions in the East Coast of the united States amainaron after two hours of having started, but then returned at noon. The problems now affecting areas throughout the united States and parts of Europe.

Twitter, for example, said it continues to feel the effects of the attack. “The previous issues have re-emerged, and some people may experience issues accessing Twitter. We’re working on it!”, said the company in a press release.

The Department of Homeland Security of the U.S. “is investigating the possible causes” of the attack, according to Gillian M. Christensen, a spokeswoman for the department.

Spotify did not respond to a request for comment.

In a DDoS attack, computers are attacked with an overwhelming volume of false requests for data, which slows down dramatically access to these sites, and in extreme cases can completely eliminate the legitimate traffic to these sites.

Many companies use a third party service such as Dyn to manage their traffic.

“Historically, this has worked to the advantage of everyone,” said Jeremiah Grossman, director of security strategy in the company of cybersecurity SentinalOne. “However, what we are seeing now is that they have become attractive targets for DDoS attacks”.

These attacks have come at a time when cybersecurity experts have warned that attacks DDoS attacks are becoming more powerful.

This type of attacks have been made since the beginnings of the modern Internet. The have used hackers activists, pranksters and other people to leave out of combat on certain Web pages. But, until recently, the attacks on pages as large and popular as Twitter had been unusual.

Taking into account the dramatic increase in the extent and scope of DDoS attacks, providers of domain name System (DNS by its acronym in English) are struggling to increase the bandwidth capability and to withstand the latest attacks.

The increase of Internet-connected devices at home and the office, from security cameras to smart tvs has made it easier to make attack of type DDoS.

The attackers need an army of computers to send an overwhelming number of requests to Web pages and servers. To get that army, they usually use a network of computers hacked. But, with the growing popularity of new devices that have computers built in, some hackers have been able to organize attacks and a network zombie by routers or video cameras.

Taking into account how simple it is usually to have access to this type of device, researchers such as Shankar Somasundaram, Symantec, think that the problem of DDoS attacks will get worse before they can improve. “There will be more attacks of this kind,” he said.

editor’s Note: This article was updated on October 21, at 4:51 p. m. Pacific time in the united States to add the comment from the company Dyn, which confirms that the attacks have ceased, and the problem has been solved.
