The European Union warned Whatsapp and Yahoo to protect the privacy of its users – Telam

The 28 countries that make up the European Union, through its commissions, of protection of data, sent today a statement to WhatsApp and Yahoo which require respect for the privacy of the people, after episodes of exchange of personal information between the chat service and Facebook and data exfiltration and espionage of mails in which was involved the Internet portal.

In the first case, the european authorities asked him to WhatsApp -bought by Facebook in 2014 – allow the sharing of personal information of its users with the popular social network until “the legal protections appropriate to be insured,” according to the statement released by the website of the Reuters news agency.

As part of a change in its terms of service and privacy policy, WhatsApp had announced in late August that he was going to share “some information” with Facebook, among which are included the phone number of their users and the information about the frequency with which he used this instant messaging service.

“we Had constructive discussions with the authorities of data protection, even before our update, and we continue with the commitment to respect the regulations in force”, said a spokesperson of WhatsApp.

on the other hand, the european authorities also approached Yahoo about the massive leakage of private data of 500 million users, an incident that met last September but that happened in 2014.

This last company was also challenged by the European Union by the software developed to search for specific content in all the emails they received to their users, by order of the government of the united States.

In this regard, the authorities asked Yahoo a report on all aspects of the data breach, and in addition he was asked to notify their users regarding the “adverse effects” of this episode.
