The FOTCIENCIA contest rewards the best images of science year in order to bring research closer to society through artistic photographs.
Only 15% of Spanish citizens shows interest in science and technology. In order to increase this percentage, various entities have organized outreach activities with which to attract, promote and teach research to society. One of the best known is FOTCIENCIA, a competition organized by the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT) and the CSIC in order to reward the best images of science of the year.
As was the case in last year’s edition, FOTCIENCIA gives us a unique opportunity to bring research closer to society through artistic photographs. In addition, each image is accompanied by a commentary in which the scientific interest of illustrating explained, helping to spark interest and curiosity. In the thirteenth edition of this competition they have been submitted nearly 700 images of science, including the jury chose the titled ‘What hides the hand of a child?’
The authors were able to photograph the handprint of a child of six years, after deposited on a petri dish. This “plate” is normally used for culturing microorganisms, so the image can be seen different colonies of yeasts and bacteria of different colors and shades. The purpose of this photograph was teaching students of a primary school child education and the importance of washing hands on one hand, and secondly, to show the diversity of microorganisms that exist in our skin.
The picture that heads this article-awarded in the “micro” – is a zeolite crystal , obtained from waste used to remove heavy metals from contaminated waters. Thus, with a photograph that recalls the planet Earth, we can highlight the importance of two key activities: the use of waste and contaminated water treatment. FOTCIENCIA also recognized other images of science related to biology, agriculture, physics and food technology, as seen in the following gallery:
