Web server first turns 25 – The Red

Paul G. Bejarano / The Spanish /

On December 20, 1990, it’s been a quarter century, were born the first web page and the first web server. A team of scientists from the CERN (the CERN) had created the first two browsers that understand the language HTML and through them gained access to hypertext files , links that now constitute the basic ingredient of the Internet.

World Wide Web , which established the basic ingredients to make the Internet as we know it today, was its first flickers. Tim Berners-Lee , considered the father of the Web, and his team had materialized by the end of 1990 a proposal that the British physicist had submitted a year and a half earlier, in March 1989, and just awakened interest in their higher

The Web is commonly translated into Castilian as the Red Although when Tim Berners-Lee was working on a name for his invention maybe thinking more of the other translating web..: web. He chose this name after discarding others as Information Mesh (mesh data) and The Information Mine (mine information).

The truth is that Berners-Lee designed a system for structuring and exchanging information via the Internet that allowed display great complexity in a very simple way. The metaphor of a spider web, where each party born connect with others, fits the concept of hypertext , which allowed a link with other resources in a more natural way.

Chief, I have an idea
Tim Berners-Lee, the main architect of this system, had begun to work on it a decade ago. In 1980 there was a 25 year old, and spent a six-month stay at CERN where he developed a software prototype called ENQUIRE, which used the concept of hypertext . In 1984 he returned to the research center, which at that time became the largest Internet node in Europe. Attention: Internet existed since the 60s, but in a very different molding to the one we know now

In his second stay, Berners-Lee wanted to combine the advantages of hypertext with the Internet . CERN, as a whole mammoth institution, needed to facilitate smooth communication between departments and employees. The mechanisms that were used at that time to manage information were not entirely effective, making it difficult for scientists to share data.

proposed that Berners-Lee developed in 1989 received great attention from their superiors. He was not discouraged and continued working on it. Spend more than a year and a half until the British physicist was able to file a proposed patched . Meanwhile, he had met the Belgian engineer Robert Cailliau, also used in the CERN, who supported the project and contributed to its improvement.

The work would also be supported by the head of Berners-Lee, Mike Sendall, who encouraged him to experiment with his idea on a NeXT computer (which manufactured the company that Steve Jobs created after leaving Apple). It was November 1990, the kick-off of the World Wide Web had already been given. In just two months a team of CERN worked on the proposal designed by the British physicist and Belgian engineer.

Berners-Lee created the first browser for World Wide Web in that month and did so on the wearing NeXT software. Export the work was language that run on Windows, a more widespread system. It follows a scholar, math student Nicola Pellow, which schedules the Line Mode Browser.

At Christmas 1990, the project team gained access to hypertext files across browsers they had just created. Tools HTTP (HyperText Transfer Protocol) and HTML (HyperText Markup Language) had been developed , along with the concept of URL (Uniform Resource Identifier). Internet was on the threshold of becoming a popular space.

To what HTTP and HTML serve
What Tim Berners-Lee was looking for his system was nothing but more effective communication between the various scientists working and collaborating with CERN. For that he invented these two tools. HTML is the language, a code that allows you to structure the information according to their own rules, while HTTP is a transport protocol, a method for allowing the machines to send data packets to each other.

The advantage of hypertext with respect to plain text is the possibility of expanding the meaning of a word, a phrase, an image or any visible element. Links are at the origin of the term “Web,” as are those linking pages and interlock information.

The great achievement of the World Wide Web was to become a global standard : all browsers read HTML and HTTP understand all servers, for which different manufacturers have had to implement these standards

That this has happened thanks to the April 30, 1993,. CERN released the technology that was created in the center . From that moment, anyone could use HTTP and HTML free. Cailliau was one of the main drivers of this movement, which took place after the University of Minnesota began to charge a license for the use of Gopher, a protocol of its own creation based on a menu interface text information highly hierarchical.

The following year, CERN would be in charge of the development of the World Wide Web, while Berners-Lee founded the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) in order to create Web standards and recommendations published periodically. In 1999 he published Weaving the Web, a book that explains how the project was conceived.

You can tell the Web went from theory to practice 25 years ago. Hence the site of CERN, in its brief history of the World Wide Web, from the 60s to 1995 caption 1990 as “ birth of the World Wide Web .”
