In 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into space. This was a milestone in the history of mankind, but also marked the beginning of a lot of pitches devices, which end up becoming waste littering the orbit of the Earth .
To display the amount of waste of satellites and special ships that roam the Earth , Stuart Grey , Professor of College London, published a video in which it is observed as these objects have been accumulating over the years.
According to Grey, a total of 20,000 pieces of space junk larger than 10 centimeters in length floating around the Earth . Meanwhile, there are about half a million measuring one centimeter and tens of millions with a smaller size. All these fragments are spinning out of control.
To determine the exact location of waste, Grey used information from a specialized in tracking space junk portal.
The risk of the large accumulation of space junk in Earth orbit is considered a latent risk by several experts. In 2014, the International Space Station (ISS) had to move three times to avoid a deadly collision with these wastes.
To control this, agencies such as NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) have created protocols to reduce the generation of new debris. Also, specialists are developing various initiatives to remove debris.
