India has successfully placed a probe on Wednesday space, known as Mangalyaan , in the orbit of Mars, as reported by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). This country becomes the first Asian nation to achieve -Japan failed in 1998, and China, in 2011 and in the fourth space power to reach the red planet, after the United States, Russia and Europe.

The Mars Orbital Mission (MOM for short) is also the cheapest trip to date at a cost of $ 73 million (over 56 million), one-tenth of what they cost projects US similar.

The main objective of this mission is to demonstrate the technological capabilities of India and also to study the planet’s atmosphere and surface. To do this, the probe is equipped with five instruments, including an imager includes several colors or a tracker of methane gas. The satellite, designed and built in 15 months by ISRO, was released on 5 November last from the base of Sriharikota, aboard a PSLV C-25 rocket. It has traveled 670 million miles in 300 days at a speed of 22 kilometers per second.

“The odds were against us. Among the 51 missions that have been launched so far only 21 were successful. We have achieved “said the Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi. “All the credit goes to our scientists, even today our program is known for being more profitable. Our scientists have shown the world a new engineering paradigm and the power of imagination.”

“The while our scientists have invested in this mission is even lower than that is dedicated to Hollywood movies, “stressed Modi referring to the 15 months 1000 Indian researchers working on the project, well below the six years are usually devoted to similar trips.

The American space agency NASA congratulated the ISRO for its success. Indeed, the American lunar probe Maven came two days ago in Martian orbit, mission significantly more expensive with a cost of 670 million even if it is a more powerful project and to carry out further studies.

India has one of the world’s most active space programs. In 2013 it launched the first satellite navigation system itself similar to System American Global Positioning System (GPS), which will become operational in 2015 also in 2008 sent its first lunar probe, plans to launch in 2016 his first space mission manned.
