Kindle Oasis: the best eReader history has only one drawback – Gizmodo in Spanish

Kindle Oasis: the best eReader history has only one drawback

Perfume is the story of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, a French perfumer obsessed with achieving the perfect perfume. The great novel by Patrick Suskind has its perfect reflection on Amazon, obsessed with achieving the perfect eReader company. The umpteenth attempt of this obsession is called Kindle Oasis, and if it is not perfect lacks very, very little.

the truth is that not expecting much from my first hour with the Kindle Oasis. What he had an asymmetrical design seemed more like a gimmick for show than anything else, the truth is that little can already do to improve devices like the Kindle Paperwhite or Kindle Voyager right?

Clearly, I was wrong.

on the left, the Kindle Oasis, right, Voyager

a first detail: photos press on white and neutral background do not do any justice to the Kindle. Its size is shocking. The screen has the same size as the Voyager (6 inches at 300 dpi resolution). However, the device dimensions are ridiculously small. Its thinnest part is only 3.4 mm. The thickest reaches 8.5 mm, but still a model that weighs only 131 grams and is barely noticeable in your pocket. Stunning design work.

Ergonomically perfect

Willy Loor is the Director of Industrial Design Kindle. When I asked why so unconventional that way, Loor smiled and pointed at my hands. I found myself taking notes on the smartphone with both hands while holding the Kindle comfortably Oasis hanging three fingers of my left hand. It would have been impossible to do the same with another Kindle. Even with Voyager.

Loor explains that Amazon have a laboratory in which there are only people reading in different models of Kindle as Amazon engineers study their behavior. This unique laboratory data came two. The first is that the natural way to hold a book is holding him on one side, not down.

from left to right: the back cover of the Kindle Oasis, with the same piece with the metal reinforcement already installed, and the sheath
.

it is not only that the Kindle Oasis have that. The thickest part is that houses most of the electronics and components, from the screen to the internal metal reinforcement have been modified with a purpose: moving the center of gravity towards that side. The result is that the device falls naturally in the hand hold anything else.

But we said that peculiar Kindle reading lab had left two facts. The second is that readers tend to change hands frequently when reading. For that reason, the Oasis Kindle automatically turns your screen if you turn the device to hold it with the other hand. In addition, with the same gesture his physical buttons are remapped to turn the page or scrolling down so that remains up and down is up. It seems silly, but results in a user experience so intuitive that requires no learning curve, and it’s great.

the power button and MicroUSB port for charging.

the display, by the way, is 60% brighter than the Voyager, and its brightness is more uniform thanks to the redistribution of its LED and its new location on the side. It also remains touch. The only physical buttons are to move on, and power. Anyway, just open the cover lid to activate the device, which leads us to the next important new Kindle Oasis …

With or without cover

The Kindle Oasis is sold with its own case. It is nice and pleasant to the touch, but incorporates an important feature: battery. By itself, the device has a range similar to that of Voyager weeks. If you connect your sleeve, that autonomy rises to almost two months. A battery charge each other, so 10 minutes with the cover on equal approximately an additional 30 minutes of reading.

The cover is secured by a magnetic connector five contacts that requires no effort and remains solid. The accessory is available in black, walnut colors, and reddish.

With the cover on, the Kindle becomes an equally small, though perhaps less daring and more conventional device when you hold bareback. The good news is that it comes to choosing to have less battery than we are used to in an eReader in exchange for less weight. Without the cover, autonomy is already great. With the case that figure further improves and allows us even face long journeys without carrying the charger.

like everything you’ve seen so far? Me too, but there is a major problem. The Kindle Oasis is significantly more expensive than other models with which it shares showcase. It costs 289 euros compared with 79 standard Kindle, the Paperwhite 129, or 189 of the Voyager. It is a considerable outlay. In return you get a device that, if not the perfect eReader, it lacks little. The Kindle Oasis can be booked from today, and goes on sale on April 27.
