Find hidden pyramid in the interior of the temple of Kukulcan – The Press of Honduras

Yucatan, Mexico

A pyramid structure that may date to the years 550-800 was discovered in the interior of the temple of Kukulkan, at the archaeological site of Chichen Itza, in the mexican state of Yucatan (east), informed engineers and anthropologists of mexico.

This is the second pyramidal structure in the interior of Kukulkan that has been identified after it was discovered first in the 1930s, which indicates that the majestic building maya was erected in at least three stages, i.e. three pyramids one over the other until you reach the one that is also known as “The Castle”.

It’s like the dolls matrushkas, of the great we took another, and another,” he said at a press conference, René Chávez Insurance, project manager and researcher at the Institute of Geophysics of the state National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The pyramid newly discovered, that it would be the oldest to correspond to the period maya, the pure, and has about 10 meters of height.

The second, discovered in the 1930s and corresponds to the transitional period (years 800-1000), reaches 20 meters to culminate in The Castle, of almost 30 meters and it corresponds to the period of decadence (1050-1300).

Denisse Argote, of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) explained that in pre-hispanic archaeology it is common that the most important structures of a settlement have been carried out in several stages.

“either by the deterioration of the structures, because there comes a new group of power, because it establishes a new lineage, as it is a ceremony of renewal of the time… There are many reasons by which you can build another new structure,” said Argote.

This structure was discovered with a non-invasive technique unique in the world, so-called tomography, developed by experts from the UNAM and the INAH, and which consists in illuminating the interior of the pyramid, to see it inside without being damaged.

The importance of this finding, added Argote, is that it will allow us to know with greater precision to the maya culture is pure, that is to say “their original population without the influence of the people of central Mexico” and that imprimó its impact on the structure of Kukulkan as is now known.

With this same technique, in 2015, the INAH and UNAM discovered that the pyramid of Kukulkán is built on a cenote, as it is called to the underground rivers that abound in the southeast of Mexico and the maya considered to be sacred.

The researchers hypothesize that the mayans knew of the existence of the cenote since they began the construction of the first stage of the temple in honor of Kukulkan, the feathered serpent, their highest deity.

The Spanish named this temple “The Castle” and in 2007 was declared following a vote at the global level, one of the seven wonders of the modern world.
