A glacier in Greenland melts “dramatically” / Times / Miami |

A major glacier in northeast Greenland is melting rapidly in the Atlantic Ocean, experts warned yesterday, according to whom the melting of the ice block the rise half a meter sea level.

The glacier , known as Zachariae Isstrom, “entered a phase of rapid melting in 2012,” when the rate of smelting tripled.

Now losing mass at a rate of 5,000 tonnes per year, he said study published in the journal Science.

“The shape and dynamics Zachariae Isstrom changed dramatically in recent years,” said lead study author Jeremie Mouginot, research assistant in the department of geophysics University of California, Irvine (UCI).

The glacier is pouring “huge amounts of icebergs into the ocean, that merge will result in raising the sea level in the coming decades,” he added.

The finding was based on 40 years of satellite data from space agencies, as well as air traffic control of the shape, size and position of the glacier over time.

The warm water Ocean is eroding the glacier from below, and increased air temperature is melting the above.

“The surface of the glacier is melting as a result of decades of continuous increase in air temperature, while its bottom is compromised by warm water currents, “said Eric Rignot, lead author of the study and professor of geophysics at the ICU.
