Europe flag flies on ‘Mars’ – Vanguardia.com.mx

They have veterans of research at Rio Tinto, as microbiologist Ricardo Amils, when the director of NASA first visited the old onubense mine in 1999, threw the anger at its own scientists for not being interested before by a terrestrial analog of Mars so overwhelming. Rio Tinto is the closest thing to the red planet on Earth. Its soil is played by iron compounds such as jarosite and hematite minerals have also been found on Mars. And in the lab, the bacteria in the mining region, which draw their energy from iron, have shown that they could survive in the unforgiving Martian conditions, whenever a millimeter layer of soil to protect them from ultraviolet radiation and high temperatures.

the mission simulation is very realistic. Attendees of seven European scientific organizations feel they are on the surface of Mars until a herd of goats goes by surprise in the place. Among researchers there is laughter and optimism. “The time for robotic exploration of Mars has come to an end. The Curiosity robot [walking the planet since 2012] is the best that can be sent. Now, if we want to be smarter, you have to send astronauts, robots accompanied by friends to improve their capabilities, “says aeronautical engineer Javier Gómez Elvira, a former director of the Center for Astrobiology.
