In 2008, Sony released the first tv with OLED technology, a model of small dimensions (11 inches diagonal) that cost almost 2500 euros. It was his first and only attempt. Criticism and little interest in the market ended up condemning this product category.
Until now. After that first attempt the japanese company drifted soon his attention to the more lucrative business of televisions based on LCD screen but almost a decade later, Sony wants to get back to it. At CES this year, the company has shown that it will be its first OLED screen in large size for the living room, the A1E.
As other tvs OLED market, A1E boasts of very bright colours, perfect reproduction of the dark tones or black and a little thick. It also supports signal at 4K with high dynamic range (HDR), using Android TV as the operating system and can be controlled by voice command through a device such Google Home.
What most surprised those who see it for the first time, however, will be the absence of speakers. The screen only has an extremely thin around the active surface, and a single cable is very thin to connect to computers or other appliances.
Where is the trick? The tv does not need speakers because the entire surface of the screen vibrates to produce the sound. The result has good fidelity and, most importantly, does not affect the perceived quality of the image because, according to the company’s engineers, the vibrations are so tiny and fast that can be ignored with ease.
Those looking for more size, however, are doomed to use PC solutions conventional or technologies already known. In this fair, for example, Sony has introduced a projector range is very limited, which can display a 100-inch screen and only a few inches from the wall.
These have been the two major developments in a conference in which Sony has chosen to redeem and show to the american market some of the products that the europeans had the opportunity to see at the fair IFA in Berlin. In addition to tvs and projectors, Sony prepares new wireless headphones with noise cancellation, both in models of small dimensions as in helmets of high quality and performance.
