In a speech to the Forum Global Editors Network (GEN) closed today in the Catalan capital, Drummond admitted that the closure of Google News in Spain was “one of the saddest decisions” that had to be taken as responsible for the company.

The initiative began with partners once, including GEN and daily The Guardian, Die Zeit, Les Echos and El País but now associates and more than 65 participants, and about a thousand companies have expressed interest in participating, according to Drummond.

As part of the DCI initiative, Google has created a fund of 150 million to support innovative technological projects of the European media in the digital realm.

“It is a complicated task and we are establishing the governance structure of the fund. We want to take the appropriate time to do it well, in a transparent and equitable manner, “said the head of Google, who said that the details of the grant application process will be announced in September.
