MADRID Wikipedia was recognized yesterday with the Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation. The jury praised the “democratic, open and participatory” method employed by the encyclopedia to spread the universal knowledge.
Founded in 2001 by Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia is among the 10 most visited websites recalls Associated Press .

This is the first time in 35 year history of the award that the name Princess of Asturias is used. The abdication of King Juan Carlos last year left the crown in the hands of Philip VI. The title Princess of Asturias became Leonor, 9, eldest daughter of Felipe and Letizia and current heir to the throne.
The awards, created in 1981, are endowed with $ 56.150 and sculptures by Joan Miró . They will be delivered in October in Oviedo
