Robin Williams leads Google searches 2014 – The Universal

The suicide of Robin Williams stuck in the collective mind of the world more than anything else this year, according to searches on Google.

The reaction to the death of Williams in August tops the list of most searched topics on Google in 2014, beating such prominent events as the World Cup in Brazil, the outbreak of ebola, the disappearance in March of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 and Ice Bucket Challenge (Challenge bucket of ice water), a viral internet phenomenon to raise money and draw attention to ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Other topics that intrigue generated worldwide in Google included the addictive game for advanced cell “Flappy Bird” bearded transsexual singer Conchita Wurst, the Middle East militant group Islamic State, the success of Disney “Frozen” and the Olympics Winter in Russia.

Williams, Ebola, global and Ice Bucket issues were also among the most talked about on Facebook this year, according to data presented this week. Google on Tuesday introduced them.

The death of Williams made many would remember the highlights of his career. In the first days after his suicide, there was an increase of six figures on the number of searches on Google the term “carpe diem” – a phrase equivalent to “live the moment” Williams popularized in the movie “Dead Poets Society” Latin .

Reports of the long struggle against depression Williams tripled search for this term. There was also a barrage of questions about his films (among the top five are:. “Mrs. Doubtfire,” “Dead Poets Socie ty,” “Good Will Hunting,” “Jumanji” and “Patch Adams”)

Google list of most searched terms as globally this year reflects activity in the United States with few exceptions. Wurst not entered the list of 10 most wanted in the United States, nor the Sochi Games. Instead, netizens were more curious than the rest in the confrontation last August of a white police officer that ended the life of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia also aroused more interest in the country than in the rest of the world.

Although the company is usually the last to present their balance each year, classification often provides more revealing information about what people think and it works on two out of three requests for information on the Internet.

The list of search engine Yahoo indicates that their Web sites have to ca ter to people wanting fun, though Ebola topped the list in 2014, celebrities have taken six of the other positions available. Among them were Ariana Grande (no. 3), actress Jennifer Lawrence (No. 4), Kaley Cuoco (no. 5), the Kardashian reality TV star (no. 6) and singer Miley Cyrus (no. 8). Yahoo also highlighted the video game “Minecraft” whose popularity grew after being sold for 2,500 million this year, “Frozen” and the latest gadget from Apple, the iPhone 6.

Instead of making a comprehensive collection of his most searched terms, Bing – Microsoft’s ownership makes disparate lists according to categories such as NBA athletes the type of LeBron James, celebrities Kardashian, holiday destinations (Costa Rica) or musicians (Beyonce) .
