Washington .- The digital encyclopedia Wikipedia highlighted the “great honor” to receive the Princess of Asturias Award for International Cooperation 2015, an award to the “core” of their existence and use to explore new “opportunities “on free access to information in Spanish.
“Cooperation is the core of who we are,” said Efe Katherine Maher, Head of Communications of the Wikimedia Foundation, which runs and manages Wikipedia based in San Francisco, United States.
For Maher was “a surprise” dawn yesterday with news of the award praised “the important example of international cooperation, democratic, open and participatory” depicting the digital free encyclopedia with more than 37 million articles written in 288 languages by volunteers around the world.
According to data provided by Wikimedia, the Spanish edition of Wikipedia is one of the largest with nearly 1,200,000 articles, and in May, his pages received over 1,400 million hits. According to Maher, the award has come at an “exceptional” moment for the Hispanic community of Wikipedia, since its annual conference, Wikimania will be held this year in Mexico, in July. At the conference there will be a special chapter devoted to topics and presentations in Spanish.
Established in 2001 by American entrepreneur Jimmy Wales with the help of the philosopher Larry Sanger, Wikipedia reaches about 500 million visitors per month and is among the ten most visited websites in the world.
The “secret” of his success “is that everyone uses it and everyone is part of it,” said Maher as “belongs to the people who create it and use it. It belongs to the world “he added.
At the award received by Wikipedia chose 24 candidates from 10 countries such as Unesco, the Sherpas of the Himalayas, the Spanish armed forces, the European Space Agency and former President of Chile Ricardo Lagos, among others.
