Amazon received a court order to disclose the audio recorded by your device, Echo, a speaker with a homely atmosphere that responds to voice commands, the contents of which might shed some light on a possible homicide in Arkansas, southern united States.
Victor Collins, of 47 years, was found drowned in the bathtub of the home of James Bates, in Bentonville, Arkansas, in November of last year.
according to investigators, Collins had signs of having fought with Bats and was charged with first-degree murder, confirmed to AFP on Wednesday the defence lawyer Kimberly Weber.
In the course of the investigation, an officer found a device to Amazon Echo in the house of Bates. It is a cylinder about 20 cm high that is placed in the home and responds to voice commands under the name “Alexa”.
The device records any query that is made after having heard the command “Alexa”. The content of that recording is saved on servers in the Amazon at a remote location.
Requirement
A judge then ordered Amazon to disclose these recordings, but the company “only handed over data related to the account (Bates), and not gave anything in the device Amazon Echo,” said Weber.
“we Applaud the effort of Amazon to protect my client’s privacy,” added the lawyer. But said: “we have nothing to hide”.
But the county attorney of Benton, Nathan Smith, said he regretted the failure of Amazon and hoped that the content of the recording to clarify what happened that day in the house of Bates.
“while many advocates of the private life have expressed their interest (in the case) due to the technology involved, is really to do justice to the victim,” Smith said in a statement sent to AFP.
“As officers followed the legal procedures to obtain a subpoena for this case, I hope that Amazon agrees to comply with the order,” added the prosecutor.
Amazon did not respond to the request from AFP for comment.
