Come the Quadrantids, the first meteor of 2017 – teleSUR TV

The first rain of stars of 2017, the Quadrantids, will peak Tuesday morning. Astronomers suggest seeing them after dark from 3 to 4 January, when the average gets to be 120 meteors per hour.

The Quadrantids are associated with the wake of the asteroid EH1 2003 and were discovered in December 2003 by the astronomer of the National Administration of Aeronautics and Space (NASA for its acronym in English), Peter Jenniskens.

>> So was the spectacular rain of stars that adorned the end of this week

The Earth crosses the orbit of 2003 EH1 at a perpendicular angle, which means that we will pass by the remains of this asteroid.

however, this rain of stars are the least observed in the year, due to take place in early January, when winter is at its maximum in the northern hemisphere, which makes it difficult to comment.

To see them, it is best to start in dark places without light pollution. On this occasion, the Moon will not prevent to enjoy the spectacle, as found in waxing.

Datum: The star rains occur when the trace particles of dust and rocks left by comets in their orbit around the Sun entering the Earth’s atmosphere and volatilize, which produces a luminous effect.
