Paleontologists discovered a specimen of a new species of horned dinosaur in Canada that dates back 65 million years.
Close to his cousin Triceratops, the herbivorous dinosaur was baptized Regaliceratops peterhewsi, referring to his huge shield-shaped gland behind his skull, and the name of its discoverer ( Peter Hew).
But scientists prefer the nickname he was given, “Hellboy”, name of a cartoon character with horns.
This finding was published this week in the last edition of Current Biology.
The skull, virtually intact, this dinosaur was discovered a decade ago. Protruding from a cliff overlooking the Oldman River in Alberta.
“This specimen comes from a region of Alberta where we had not found fossils of dinosaurs with horns before, so we knew immediately that this finding was important” said Caleb Brown, a paleontologist at the Royal Tyrrell Museum.
“But it is only after this skeleton was detached from the rock in the laboratory, the scientists realized they were in a kind totally new, “he said.
A reconstruction of” Hellboy “sign that was similar in many respects to the Triceratops, but with a crown around the peculiar head, a most impressive nose horn and a small horn above each eye.
According to these paleontologists the discovery of this new dinosaur is especially important for its implications regarding the evolution of horned dinosaurs.
