Apple chartered watches 3.6 million last quarter – El Nuevo Herald

A new report estimates that Apple chartered watches 3.6 million in the latest quarter, more than expected by some analysts and enough to change the competitive landscape for exercise bands and other wearables devices.

Apple chartered enough units of its new SmartWatch to exceed FitBit market leader in the most recent quarter, according to analysts at International Data Corp. (IDC). His report warns that traditional exercise bands could lose popularity with smartwatches and other devices that include more tools.

“People want to get more of their devices,” said Ramon Llamas, IDC said in an interview. “It’s a bit like smartphones surpassed the basic cellular”.

The consumer response to Apple Watch has been the subject of much speculation since the new device went on sale in April. Although Apple is known for making popular gadgets, the watch represents a new category of products for the company. Critics have questioned whether it is useful enough that consumers need or want to have one on their wrists.

Apple has not revealed how many watches sold. After the company published its latest financial report, where Apple selling watches grouped in a wider category called “other products”, many analysts estimated it sold between two and three million watches during the quarter ended in June.

To calculate the number of units chartered by the company of Cupertino, California, but not actual sales, IDC said to begin with the financial reports of Apple but also gathers information from suppliers, distributors and consumers.

Although the numbers on Apple Watch IDC are higher than other recent estimates, still below many forecasts made before Apple started selling the watch at the end of April.
