A US federal jury convicted Saturday Apple to pay more than $ 234 million for infringing a patent technology owned by a foundation linked to the University of Wisconsin.
On Tuesday, the jury of the district court based in Madison (Wisconsin) ruled in favor of the foundation that protects intellectual property rights of University of Wisconsin, who sued Apple in early 2014, and today’s conviction was known. In the lawsuit, the foundation alleged that Apple used patented technology in 1998 by the University of Wisconsin, inserted in several of its models of iPad and iPhone processors.
The jury ruled in favor of the foundation, although significantly downgraded the figure for compensation requesting the plaintiffs amounting to a maximum of 862.4 million dollars.
On that same patent, the foundation also sued the company Intel in 2008 and the case was settled to following year for an undisclosed sum.
Apple is immersed for years in a legal battle with the South Korean company Samsung for patent issues.
Recently, a federal appeals court USA Samsung said that Apple violated several patents, but the overall picture of the iPhone.
Apple today announced it will appeal the verdict, but declined to comment further on the matter.
