Tim Cook talks about Apple Music figures and his vision for the TV and automobiles – The Wall Street Journal Americas

LAGUNA BEACH , California – Apple Inc . AAPL 1.83 % > he said it has 15 million users in its music streaming service.

In an interview on the main stage of WSJDLive, global technology conference The Wall Street Journal, the company’s chief executive, Tim Cook, said that number, 6.5 million are subscribers Apple Music payments and 8.5 million customers are testing the service for free for three months.

Apple Music Apple released June 30 and offered a free trial period of three months. When finished, users pay $ 9.99 a month for a subscription, or $ 14.99 per family. The first group of customers came out of the trial period in late September.

In August, Apple senior vice president Eddy Cue, who oversaw the launch of Apple Music, said there were 11 million people in the trial of the service. That suggests that about 60% of these users agreed to pay for the service after the trial period ended. In comparison, Spotify AB, launched in 2008, says it has 75 million active users and 20 million subscribers.

Cook said consumers are responding positively to one of the features that differentiate the service from its competitors: the human healing playlists.

“Our runway is very good,” he said. Cook.

The executive also said the new version of Apple TV will begin shipping by the end of next week and the company will begin taking orders on Monday.

Cook said the new system provides the basis for changing the viewing experience, although Apple has not secured all content arrangements you need to match the services of cable and satellite providers.

The Apple CEO said the “linear” way of watching TV through channels is disappearing and that the current way of viewing TV has outlived its usefulness. Cook argues that Apple TV, with its ability to search multiple streaming services and interact with applications, has “developed an infrastructure to repair a broken terribly thing that none of us like.”

Cook was also unusually frank about the automotive industry, but did not want to talk about Apple’s interest in building an electric car. He sees a “massive change” in this sector, as large technology sector away from its focus on internal combustion engines.

The software, electrification and autonomous driving technologies will play a crucial role in the cars of the future, Cook said. “The industry is at a turning point for massive changes, not just an evolutionary change.”

In the short term, Apple is focused on improving the system of information and entertainment in the car, through carplay service.
