Finally we can try Google Duo, the new application for video calls to work (at least for now) exclusively on smartphones Android and iOS.
Many still wonder why Google launches an app of this kind taking and start the Hangouts platform, present in the web and mobile. Duo is an approach with marked similarities to other products, but aimed to compete directly in the phone market, especially against FaceTime, the video calling service built into the Apple iPhone. Duo begins an arduous path of insertion, but with a clear advantage: customers with different brands of computers can benefit equally
When configuring the application first thing we require is to verify our phone number.. The application is extremely simple and has no more than a list of contacts to call. Google ensures that the quality of video compression and stability audio for each communication has been one of its main priorities, ground on which the company already has experience from years of Google Talk, Voice and of course Hangouts.
Inside the app to initiate a call just we have to play one round button available, which will lead us to choose a contact. This part is important: if the contact you tried calling does not have Duo installed will be sending a text message to the app is downloaded, something that not everyone will appreciate if you start receiving uncontrolled notifications
. once you call us via Duo we have the first surprise (pleasant and original for this category of software): see the other person on the screen in a live even though we have not answered. This would be the equivalent of spying few seconds through the peephole in the door open before deciding. Our contact will not see us until we have answered the call.
In the first tests with Duo noticed that one of the differentiators in this implementation of Google is the speed with which communications are established. Many are accustomed to wait a few seconds while a voice call or video is connected and can see and hear the other person, but Duo this practically does not happen, when attending are already talking.
Google invested much in the technical part that makes communications. The platform is based on WebRTC, and adds a ton of own adjustments to accurately control the quality of each call if network conditions change. Duo can even maintain the current video when switching from WiFi network to 3G / 4G or vice versa.
For security Google makes clear that Duo encrypted from start to finish all communications, a standard rather than mandatory in any modern service.
not yet we know how to integrate Duo (or if it will at all) with Allo, the other app for communications that Google introduced in May this year. Allo is oriented text messaging and it would be a direct competitor to iMessage, Apple’s platform, which unlike Google’s solution does not allow its use outside the grounds of the iPhone. In market prospects it is clear that Google tries to order their product lines, especially those that could not compete best with other developers.
What will happen to Hangouts? We do not know exactly yet. We do know that Google plans to target the enterprise market this service probably hand Google for Work.
This however leaves us with a mystery regarding the release of such solutions. Is there really a clear advantage when using another application to chat? What benefit can introduce Duo when all already have Facebook Messenger, Skype, Viber, WhatsApp and many other similar?
Duo is now available at no charge in the Play store for Android and in the AppStore for iPhone . Below let them download links corresponding
