With Fuchsia, Google is testing a mysterious new operating system – CNET in Spanish

First there was the battle of Windows to Mac. And then there was iOS against Android. Now, with a project entitled name Fuchsia, Google may be starting another war platforms. However, we still do not know who is on the other side of the battle line.

Fuchsia, whose existence was announced on Friday, is a operating system designed for “modern phones and modern personal computers,” Google says. the technology giant already has Android and Chrome OS to power these devices, which increases the likelihood of Fuchsia will compete with the products themselves to Google.

It is difficult to launch a new operating system for the general public. But with Android, Google became one of the few companies to achieve this successfully, and the team includes veterans Fuchsia operating systems like BeOS legendary. And, as Apple showed iOS on their iPhones, a new operating system can offer tremendous advantages to its customers.

You can be happy with Windows, Android, MacOS or iOS. But there is room for improvement. A new beginning in the world of operating systems may result in stronger security, better responsiveness, longer battery life and enable developers to create sophisticated apps.

The obstacles of an operating system

Creating an operating system is a technically difficult process, especially one like Android or Windows you have to deal with a variety of hardware. When a new operating system is designed, it is difficult to make developers to create software specifically designed for it (a key problem that brought down several operating systems, including Windows Phone, Firefox OS Mozilla, Palm WebOS and Ubuntu Touch. If people do not use the software, there is no incentive for developers to support it.

And arouse enthusiasm among consumers for a new operating system is a challenge. “users really do not want to run operating systems . what they want to do is run apps, “said Michael Silver, an analyst with Gartner.

Google could help a new operating system to make it compatible with Android. But that would also make it difficult for Google experience a new beginning.

operating systems can also achieve success in more limited domains, from networking equipment to microwave ovens, for example. and it is still unclear what the ambitions and aspirations of Fuchsia are. Google declined to comment on Fuchsia.

An operating system is responsible for managing the most basic operations of a device. Records the click, sends data through a network, manage tasks running on a processor, stores files on a drive, a screen displays graphics and controls the camera phone. In the heart of an operating system is software known as kernel (grain), which bears the name Fuchsia Magenta.

Android is based on the kernel Linux open source that has existed since 1991.

Fuchsia is still in its early stages. Google has it running on an Acer Switch Alpha 12, a hybrid laptop and tablet, but apparently also wants to run on a Raspberry Pi, a much less powerful device. It also runs on ARM powered chips, which enhance the most mobile and tablet devices.

The team Fuchsia

Some notable developers are collaborating on this project.

  • Travis Geiselbrecht, who worked on the failed but influential operating system the 90s called BeOS, the iPhone and the operating system for Danger Hiptop, which T-Mobile sold as the original Sidekick.
  • Brian Swetland, who worked on BeOS, the Hiptop OS and who he spent several years working in key parts of Android.
  • Chris McKillop, one of the original team members of the original iPhone and WebOS team. He also worked on the QNX operating system used in cars and BlackBerry devices. Also worked in Danger Hiptop.
  • Adam Barth, a senior member of Google’s Chrome team that has recently been working on a Google tool called Flutter trying to make it easier for developers to create software that runs on Android and iOS. He also created its own operating system known as Tau.

Fuchsia is an open source project. This means that anyone can see the programming instructions, modify them and use them for their own purposes. It’s hard to sell a software open source how Microsoft sells Windows or Adobe Systems sells Photoshop. However, it is easier to attract programmers to collaborate on open source project, and it is more likely that the software will be used and improve as a result.

The Fuchsia project is on the site Google and Github.
