The color of the image is not real. It has been artificially enhanced to show the chemical differences of the terrain of the moon of Saturn. In real terms, the tones of Tethys are fairly uniform and marks only be visible to the human eye.
Astronomers are not sure about the composition and origin of those marks. What is clear is that they are geologically much younger than the rest of the surface because, in fact, stained oldest brands, such as craters.
