Project led by Stephen Hawking explores the “extraterrestrial signals” discovered in 234-star – LaTercera (Registro)

A team of astronomers claims to have discovered "signs" the space according to your version, might belong to extraterrestrial civilizations.

The researchers, led by professor Ermanno Borra of Laval University in Quebec, point out that according to his theory, civilizations, aliens would be using a laser for communications. As well, being sent to the Earth as if it were a strobe light, it is possible to determine the glimmers of light hidden in the spectrum of light of your own star. Are these flashes the analyzed and according to the results set if they are natural or artificial.

The controversial discovery belongs to the analysis of 2.5 million readings of distant stars, and which resulted in 234 "signs", identified by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, a telescope with a diameter of 2.5 meters in New Mexico.

In the study also explained that most of the 234 stars are the same spectral type than the Sun of our solar system, which refuerzaría the hypothesis of the signals emitted intentionally.

The discovery has been discussed by several experts, among them the project Breakthrough Listen the SETI, the same backed by Stephen Hawking and Mark Zuckerberg, and now found in studies to find an alternative explanation related to an error of analysis or calibration of the instruments.

"it Is too early to be attributed unequivocally to these alleged signals to the activity of extraterrestrial civilizations," said the SETI Institute in a statement.

"Protocols are internationally agreed upon for the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life require candidates to be confirmed by independent groups using their own
telescopes, and it is necessary to exhaust all the explanations natural before you invoke aliens as an explanation," she adds.

Even so, the authors of the study claimed to rule out the alternative explanations more obvious as rapid pulsations in the atmospheres of the stars stations, or the rotation of certain molecules.

"we Must follow a scientific approach and not emotional, although intuitively I have the strong suspicion that it is of extraterrestrial signals," says Borra.

The mathematical tool to detect these bursts are called "Fourier Transformation", and is used as a quick way to
discover weak signals and strong.

"The signs may not be caused by the effects of instrumental analysis of data or because these are present in only a very small fraction of stars within a spectral range
narrow," described the researchers in the study.

"we Consider various possibilities, such as transitions, rotational molecules, pulses and fast signals generated by extraterrestrial intelligence", they said.

"we found that the detected signals have exactly the form of a signal of this type, and therefore is in agreement with the hypothesis," they added.

however, other experts are not convinced.

"do Not take into account all the natural possibilities and postulate before of time the supernatural," says Peter Plavchan of the State University of Missouri.

Andrew Siemion, director of the Research Center SETI at the University of California in Berkeley, added that "there is no claim more audacious than the discovery of extraterrestrial life".

Considering all of the above, the community SETI has established a scale for the quantification of the detection of life beyond Earth, called the "Scale of River", and that determines a level of importance for this type of phenomena, from zero (none) to ten (outstanding).

For this case, the SETI welcomed the discovery as a 0 to 1 scale.

Even so, the project members argued that they would continue monitoring the discovery.
