They photographed for the first time smaller moons of Pluto – Prensa Latina

May 13, 2015 12:21 Washington, May 13 (PL) NASA reported today that its New Horizons spacecraft first photographed Kerberos and Styx, the smallest and weakest of the five known moons has the planet slut. Upon detection in July 2013 Charon, Pluto’s giant moon, and smaller satellites Nix and Hydra in July 2014 and January 2015 respectively, New Horizons is now in sight for all known members of that system .

The scientist John Spencer of the National Administration of Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said that New Horizons is now on the threshold of discovery.

If you notice any other spacecraft moon as it approaches Pluto, will be a world that no one has seen before, said Spencer.

According to NASA, in the coming days New Horizons will begin its first search for new moons or rings that could endanger the spacecraft on passage through the Pluto system.

The images of Styx and Kerberos are allowing the search team refine the techniques used to analyze the data, which will drive even deeper limits of sensitivity.

Kerberos and Styx were discovered in 2011 and 2012 respectively, by members of the New Horizons team using the Hubble Space Telescope
