mammal communication experts indicated that the horses the same way as humans, using muscles of the nose, eyes and lips to alter their facial expressions in different situations.

The research results suggest that there are evolutionary links between different species identified by the use of facial movements.

The authors of the study, prepared by the British universities of Sussex and Portsmouth along the US Pittsburgh Duquesne University, developed a tool for categorizing facial expressions of horses based on muscle movements.

From tool, the researchers identified 17 facial movements in horses, compared to 27 in humans, chimpanzees 13 and 16 in dogs.

The researcher Jennifer Wathan, co-author of the study, said horses have the sense of sight very developed, even more than domestic cats and dogs. However, use of facial expressions “has overlooked all this time.”

“What surprised us was the rich repertoire of complex facial movements in horses, and the amount of them resembled those of humans, “said Wathan.

The author added that, despite the obvious differences between the facial structure of equine and human, were identified” movements of lips and eyes “very similar between them, and that “it is now necessary to relate these movements to moods”.

Meanwhile, the expert Karen McComb added that the findings provide valuable information in the field of veterinary practices and for animal welfare. EFE
