The NASA is preparing for the first manned space mission to Mars, however, a study warns that prolonged exposure of astronauts to galactic cosmic rays can affect cognitive ability for all life.
The exposure to highly energetic charged particles -very similar to those found in cosmic rays that bombard astronauts during spaceflight prolongados- cause significant damage to the central nervous system, leading to cognitive impairment, according to a study published in the journal Science Advances’.
According to the authors of the research, prolonged exposure over time these particles causes performance decreases, memory deficit , loss of consciousness and attention. These problems also “may affect the fundamental activities of the mission.” This situation “can have negative consequences long-term cognition throughout life”

Although the effects take months to manifest, the time required for a mission to Mars is sufficient for such problems develop. They also note that these highly energetic particles pass through even armored spacecraft and “really no way to escape of them.”
