CAPE CANAVERAL, USA (Reuters) – These days you will see the Moon bigger and brighter in nearly seven decades, a phenomenon that promises to be a heavenly spectacle of the “superluna” to the inhabitants of the Earth.
The full Moon will be located at its closest point to the Earth since 1948, said astronomers. In his closest approximation, which will happen at 1123 GMT on Monday, the satellite ground pass to a 348.400 miles of the surface of our planet, a 35.400 kilometers closer than usual, they added.
The distance of the Moon to the Earth varies because it is in an elliptical orbit and not circular around the planet.
If it is not cloudy, the full Moon will appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than usual, becoming what is called a “superluna”, according to NASA.
A superluna occurs when the time of the full Moon overlaps with the point of the moon’s orbit is 28 days, which is closer to the Earth. Approximately every 14 full moons it gives a superluna, ” said astronomer Jim Lattis, University of Wisconsin.
The next time a full Moon will come so close to the Earth will be in 2034.
